Available from 1988 through 1991, the 524td was the twenty-fourth model in this series, which came equipped with a turbo diesel engine, specifically, a 2.4 liter, M21 turbodiesel 16 which produced 114 hp. Saddled with this powerplant, the 524td became known as the slowest model in the 5-Series, and was not designed for fuel efficiency. Understandably, its sales fell short of the 533i, whose engine offered 182 hp but was bored to produce more torque and power using less gas.
