In 1991 Mazda rolled out its first SUV with true off-road capabilities. In fact, the Navajo was a rebadged Ford Explorer, hastily introduced in response to popular demand. It was named Motor Trend’s ‘Truck of the Year’ for 1991. In 1992, a rear wheel drive SUV was introduced, intended for those who liked a sporty appearance, but did not want the truck-like handling of four wheel drive. It would seem logical that subsequent Explorer upgrades should have been carried over to the Navajo. This was not the case, and while interior appointments were updated, the Navajo remained essentially unchanged for several years and never found its demographic. Poor sales influenced Mazda to discontinue the Navajo in 1994.
