These vehicles shared a chassis but the Mariner boasted more luxurious interior appointments and was considered the upmarket version of the three (one tell: no manual version was ever offered). The 5-door, compact crossover SUV was well-received, and in fact, was a market leader for Mercury. A high note for the Mariner was when former President Bill Clinton ordered a special “Presidential Edition” Mariner. However, as the U.S. economy dwindled, consumers favored brand loyalty when making major purchases. Sales for the Ford Escape easily trumped the Mariner, especially the hybrid version which sold only 12,300 units from 2006-2010. GM discontinued its Mercury division in 2010 and the Mariner went down with the ship.
