Introduced in 1997, the Oldsmobile Intrigue featured European styling aimed to compete with Japanese imports. It offered better-than-basic transportation attractively packaged in a midsize sedan. Each of its three levels came with a V6, anti-lock brakes, dual front airbags and full power accessories. To further its Euro-aura, the model offered an ‘Autobahn’ package with bigger wheels, better brakes, and a speedometer that registered up to 140 mph. The Intrigue had a distinctive appearance and was featured in the 1998 X-Files movie, and again in a chase scene in the 2002 film, ‘The Matrix Reloaded’. By 2002 consumer interest had shifted to more versatile family vehicles such as minivans and SUVs leaving many sedans behind. The Intrigue’s ‘Final 500 Collector’s Edition’ produced that year was available in a proprietary Dark Cherry Metallic paint. Buyers received a special commemorative packet.
