Saturn buffs may not be familiar with the marque’s EV1 as it was never sold through dealerships. In fact, this is one car that was never sold at all. One of the first completely electric-powered vehicles, the EV1 was only available for lease, directly from General Motors, and not one of its subdivisions. Since these cars were built upon a Saturn chassis and could only be serviced at Saturn dealerships, they have come to be known as Saturn EV1. While mass-produced, the car was only available in limited markets, namely in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, San Francisco, Sacramento, and some parts of Georgia. As might be expected, these cars were produced too far ahead of consumer compliance, and were not profitable for GM. Produced from 1996-2003, a total of 2,234 were built.
When the final EV1s came off-lease, GM recycled the materials. Few EV1s have survived, many found their way into major car collections and automotive museums. The Smithsonian is said to have an EV1 in storage. Still, a number of these vehicles are on the roads, preserved, wherever possible, by auto enthusiasts and those who value electric-powered automobiles.
