Renault cars debuted in France in the late 19th century but were not sold in the U.S. until the 1950s. Typically, the U.S. did not produce small cars and Americans, particularly in urban areas, were quick to buy Volkswagens and Renaults as “city cars” and second cars in middle class households.
In the 1980s, European and Asian brands that wished to continue selling in the U.S. usually formed partnerships with an American marque. Renault refused to comply, and this decision led to fewer sales. For example, the 405 model which was extremely popular in Europe, had sold fewer than 1,000 cars in the U.S. over several years. For this reason, the marque ceased exporting cars to the United States in the 1990s.
